Chapter Nine

The door to Banger’s opened and Chelsea hurried in, looking panicked.

“Sit down, Chelsea,” Sabrina said, and she did automatically.

“Jonas,” she said in a rush, “I am so sorry. I wouldn’t have done a thing to hurt you or your brothers. I had no idea who Sonny was. He’d been hanging around, and he asked me out on a date.” She took a deep breath. “I figured everyone in town knew you, and you probably knew him, so it never occurred to me that taking him to Rancho Diablo was… I had no idea he was an enemy. I’m so sorry.”

“It wasn’t your fault, Chelsea,” Jonas said, and Sabrina was glad to hear the kindness in his voice. “Sonny’s a snake in the grass. He preys on people to get what he wants. You couldn’t have known.”

Chelsea looked stricken. “I just want you to know that I’ve decided to go back home. I feel like I’ve abused your hospitality. And I miss Mum. I’ll be better off in my own country, I think.”

“You’re doing fine here, Chelsea,” Sabrina said. “You’ve made a lot of friends in Diablo.”

“And one bad friend.” Chelsea sounded as if she wanted to cry.

Sabrina shook her head. “Don’t go just because of Sonny, Chelsea. He could have picked anyone in this town to take advantage of. He just chose you because you’re sweet and kind. All of us can see that.”

“Still, it would be best if I went back.”

“Chelsea,” Jonas said, “I’m aware that my aunt hired you to spy on us.”

Chelsea smiled. “She didn’t really put it that way.”

“Fiona doesn’t have to. Everyone knows what she wants,” he said gruffly.

“She said ‘keep an eye on my boys and give me an update occasionally.’ That was it, Jonas, I promise.” Chelsea shook her head. “You and your brothers are all so suspicious of your aunt! But she’s so darling!”

“I know,” Jonas said. “It’s how she gets all of us to jump through hoops for her. No, Chelsea, if anybody took advantage of anyone, we took advantage of you. And as my ex-fiancée, you’re entitled to some consideration for your trouble.”

“I agree,” Sabrina said. “What did you have in mind, Jonas?”

“I was thinking airplane tickets,” Jonas said, “so you can see the country the way you said you wanted to.”

“For her and her mother,” Sabrina said. “If she’s well enough to travel, that is, don’t you think, Jonas?”

“Absolutely. A fine idea.”

Chelsea stared at them, her eyes huge. “Do you mean it?”

“I do,” Jonas said. “You’ve been a good friend to this family, and you got caught in all our dirty laundry. The least we can do is show you some beautiful places in America.”

“Diablo is beautiful,” Chelsea said.

“Of course,” Sabrina said, “but you shouldn’t leave without seeing something besides Diablo. There’s New York, and California, and Virginia, and Florida… .”

“I’ll do it,” Chelsea said, thrilled. “My mom will love this! Thank you! I can’t wait to call and tell her. Thank you, Jonas!”

Chelsea shot out of the booth and hurried off.
